Learners Class

Even though it’s been  a four day week, we’ve been so busy!

In Maths we have been focusing on position and direction. We have practised quarter turns, half turns, three quarter turns and full turns. We took our learning outside on Wednesday to practise our left and right movements. 

We are starting to learn a new song in music, called ‘Zoo Time’. It’s definitely catchy!

We have been busy writing book reviews this week, reading books is something Learners Class love, so it was easy to write down our recommendations to others.

On Thursday, we marked National Hedgehog Awareness Week by having a fully hedgehog day! Everything we did was connected to hedgehogs (even maths). In the afternoon we made hedgehog bookmarks and we took three hedgehog houses down to the forest. We  really hope we get some spiky visitors!

The weather is getting warmer and it’s wonderful to be able to take our learning outdoors.

If anyone has any hedgehogs in their garden, please post a picture on tapestry and we will make a plan of local hedgehog sightings. #hedgehog heroes.

Welcome back everyone, I hope you had a lovely Easter break!

We have lots of fun activities to look forward to this term. Learners Class will begin swimming lessons on Tuesday mornings this term. Please make sure to give your permission on Parent Pay if you haven’t already.

Mrs Gurney will be teaching computers on Tuesday afternoons this term.

This week in Maths, we have enjoyed learning about position and direction. We have made quarter turns, half turns, three quarter turns and full turns with lots of objects around the classroom and have had lots of discussion around clockwise and anti-clockwise.

In Science, we have classified animals in to 6 main groups depending on their features and enjoyed drawing pictures to demonstrate our learning.

In English this week, we have been making posters about animals that are good ‘Learners’ – like our class name! We each has our own ideas of animals that were smart and were able to back-up our opinions with facts.

In Art, drawing is our new topic and we have been looing at the artist Pablo Picasso. We learned about his style of drawing portraits and had a go ourselves. We thoroughly enjoyed this and the finished pieces were fantastic!

As part of Hedgehog Awareness week, next week, we will be having a ‘hedgehoggy day’ on Thursday 5th May. We will keep you posted!

Learners love to learn!

Who would have thought, we would be ending the week with flurries of snow? There’s nothing like the British weather!

I think hedgehogs will stay in hibernation for a little bit longer! Despite that, this week we have started some persuasive writing around how we can persuade the other classes in school to join our plight to protect the hedgehogs in our surroundings! We have been thinking about the features of persuasive writing this week and next week will be writing a speech to share and persuade our peers to hep us.

In maths, we have been learning about fractions and in particular we have explored equal parts of a whole and have been finding a half of an object.

In RE we have been thinking about Salvation, we are able to explain the meaning of Salvation ( Jesus rescuing people) and to articulate how Salvation links to the Easter Story. We are really enjoying learning about the Easter Story and it is prompting some very meaningful discussions.

We delighted in playing out in the snow flurries this week, but now need some sunshine for our newly planted seeds to grow! Roll on summer!

Learners Class

The Learners have been out and about this week and have enjoyed a lot of outdoor learning.

This half-term our Science topic is Plants. On Monday, set with pots, compost, trowels and seeds we enjoyed planting our own herbs and flowers in our outdoor area. The sun was shining and we worked together to dig, plant and sow. The children had such enthusiasm, we definitely have some budding gardeners in Learners Class.

On Tuesday, we picked the BEST day to visit the forest, the weather was warm and Spring was most certainly in the air. With our hedgehog hero hats on, we began to assess our school surroundings for encouraging hedgehogs. We listed potential hazards and also things that were already hedgehog friendly. We delighted in making some warm, cosy areas that hedgehogs might like to visit when they come out of hibernation – we are expecting some actual hedgehog houses to arrive soon and are very excited about this!

On Wednesday, we started writing our stories, based on the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. The writing produced so far has been wonderful! The children have been working really hard to use interesting vocabulary to engage their reader. Early next week they will be reading their stories to Pioneers. They are in for a real treat!

Spring is on the way and we have been so lucky to have had lots of outdoor learning this week.

Learners love to learn!

This week, we have enjoyed another visit to the mobile library in the village. We were able to return our previous books and pick some fresh, exciting stories to enjoy in class. The children were extremely well-behaved and a credit to Learners Class. When we got back to  school, we found a quiet place to enjoy our chosen books. We will enjoy a book each day and vote each Friday for our favourite.

We have ben thinking about road safety this week. We watched a short video and discussed why road safety is important. We learned how to cross the road safely using the Green Cross Code ethos STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, THINK. We created some road safety posters to show our learning.

We are continuing to learn about the features that make a good story. This week, we have worked hard to use language that will make our writing more interesting – we particularly enjoyed learning about alliteration! With all of our new skills in hand, we are excited to complete writing our own stories next week.

We are SO delighted to be taking on the school role of ‘Hedgehog Heroes’. Sleights has become a hedgehog friendly school and Learners will be finding out just how we can help to preserve our cute, spiky friends. We will be working with The British Hedgehog Preservation Society to arm ourselves with information and top tips of how we can help! We will keep you posted of our actions and progress in the coming weeks!

Welcome back everyone, i hope you had a great half-term.

Learners have been busy as always this week.

We have begun our English work around narrative and have enjoyed retelling The Three Billy Goats Gruff using a story map. We  are excited to develop our own stories, based on this popular story, as the weeks go on.

In maths we are learning about 3D shapes this week. There has been a lot of discussion about the names and properties of 3D shapes.

In Science, our new topic is plants. On Tuesday we looked carefully at daffodils in class and were able to draw and label the parts of a plant.

In RE, we have a new value, Justice. We have delighted in being able to resume our whole school Collective Worship in the Hall, this has been lovely to enjoy and learn together again.

We REALLY enjoyed World Book Day this week. We dressed up as a character from a book – and we looked amazing! We worked so hard to create our own class book, with a maths theme (which was personalised to Sleights School). We were SO proud to produce ‘Odd Bob and Even Steven Go To Sleights School’. We worked on one page each and the result was tremendous – a real team effort. The book will go in our library for all to enjoy!

This week in class we have thought a lot about well-being.

We were lucky to have a visit from Mel our well-being nurse, who shared the story ‘The Colour Monster’ with us. This book combined colours with feelings and we were able to articulate the different feelings that we knew. We then, created our own colour monsters using paper plates and different colours. Mel taught us some relaxation techniques and how to breather and relax mindfully. We really enjoyed the session.

In PHSCE we have thought about the groups and families we belong to and how thankful we are for the people in our lives.

We have enjoyed many stories as always in class this week. However this week, we have been particularly lucky to have some Learners  request to read their favourite stories to the rest of the class during story time. This has been an absolute joy! Such wonderful readers, such confidence and such a celebration of reading!

Wishing all of Learners Class and their families a happy half term. 

Learners have had the busiest of weeks this week and ‘we have had the best week ever!’

On Monday morning, some children walked down to the mobile library in the village and delighted in choosing some new books for us to read at story time, Next month another group of children will visit the library, return these books and choose some more to enjoy. 

On Monday afternoon, to build on our RE topic of Judaism, we held a Jewish Shabbat in class. We laid tablecloths and dressed the tables with plants and candles. We then enjoyed toasted bagels and juice together. We really felt the spirit of the celebration of Shabbat.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed forest school learning. The sun was shining and we had the best day in the fresh air. We transferred our RE learning to the forest and thought about another Jewish celebration called ‘Sukkot’, where Jewish families build a hut called a ‘Sukkah’ and sleep in there for a few nights to remember the Jewish pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

On Thursday, we became scientists and tested absorbent and non-absorbent materials. We used pipettes, water and different materials. We tested each one and recorded our results accordingly. I think there are a few budding scientists in Learners Class.

We have also enjoyed many stories this week as always.

What a wonderful week to be a Learner!

We have enjoyed finding out more about Chinese New Year this week. We spent time finding out about how animals link to different years and the meaning of this. We also delighted in creating our own Chinese lanterns and were amazed at how easy they were to make (some of us went home and made them with our families too).

In RE we spent time looking closely at the Jewish Shabbat and hope to enjoy our own Shabbat next week – please give consent on Parent Pay, for your child to sample the foods. 

On Wednesday 9th February we will be visiting the forest, please send your child in old clothes and please bring a spare pair of shoes in a bag. Thank you.

This week, a few Learners requested to bring in their favourite books from home and read them to the class. This has been wonderful, we are hoping to continue sharing our stories together over the coming weeks.

We have have been so enthusiastic about our learning this week.

Building on our Science topic of materials, we deepened our knowledge by being able to describe and label properties of the materials around us. We had so much fun and our scientific vocabulary was astonishing, freely using words like transparent, opaque and flexible to describe! This was wonderful! See our pictures of some properties of materials within our classroom.

Also, this week we have enjoyed making Ocean collages, which crossed curricular Geography with Art. We were peaceful and calm while enjoying this activity – just like the ocean itself!

Learners Class just love to learn – I can’t wait to see what next week brings!
