Leaders is an exciting time for the children at Sleights as they are the oldest children in school. Leaders class includes children from Year 6. They are taught by Mrs Porter and supported by Mr Everall in their own building on the school playground.
In Leaders, children are taught maths and English daily and they also gather together with the rest of the school in collective worship.
Children in Leaders class love to read. The children are very lucky to have an amazing school and class library, filled with a diverse range of books that they can enjoy reading for pleasure. Children also enjoy listening to the class story at the end of each school day. In addition to reading for pleasure, Leaders also enjoy sharing a range of texts during whole class reading sessions, where they have the opportunity to read fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts as well as a whole class reading book. Reading at home is also incredibly important. Please record the reading that your child does at home in their reading record and ensure that this, alongside their individual reading book, is in school every day.
Children in Leaders class are very lucky to be taught by specialist teachers throughout the week. On a Tuesday, children will have swimming lessons at the Leisure Centre in Whitby. Children will continue to bring home their instruments to practice throughout the week and these will need to be returned on a Thursday morning ready for music with Ralph. Computing with Mrs Gurney will also take place on a Wednesday afernoon,
Each week, homework will be set on Sumdog on a Thursday. Children will also receive spellings every two weeks; these will be sent home on a Thursday. Spellings tests will happen on the second Wednesday.
Our class blog will be updated each week so keep an eye on this for exciting updates throughout the term.

Good Morning Leaders
It’s nice to see so many of you posting or e-mailing about all the things you have been doing. I’d like to set a mission for anyone who has not yet had a go at doing so – see if you can upload or send something in by the end of the day.
English
Today I would like you to listen to Kit Wright’s poem ‘The Magic Box’. We are going to use his poem as a base for our writing using a door. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zkpmhyc
Write 6 different sentences about what you might find behind the magical door.
E.g. I opened the magical door and saw…. shadows dancing
Maths
Continue taking your temperatures at the 3 chosen times of the day and either add them to your data collection or plot them on your graph if you are doing this as you go along.
Are you beginning to notice anything about the temperatures you have taken?
Door Design
Time to get creative and think about the door that you would like to use in your writing. It could take you anywhere, opening a world of different possibilities.
The door is usually the first thing that you see that would invite you inside. Think about how you want your door to make the reader feel. There can be decorated doors found in a number of different countries – have a look at the ones below.
You might want to think about decorating an actual door (please ask permission first) or drawing and colouring or painting your design on paper.

Good Morning Leaders
I hope you have all had a relaxing break and have been able to enjoy some of the lovely weather we have been having. Some of you may have hoped we were back at school and some of you might be glad to get some more time at home, but I am sure we are all missing the company of our friends and classmates – I know that I am.
Now that Easter is over, I will be posting daily challenges for you to complete. If you are on Tapestry, you can upload anything that you would like to share with me and, if you are not using Tapestry, you can still send anything you would like to share by e-mail.
English
Have you ever looked at a door and wondered what was on the other side? In the hands or a writer, a door represents a world of possibility.
The world is in lockdown, shut behind doors for our own safety and the safety of everyone else. Closed schools, closed shops and temporarily closed for some of the things we take for granted, like playing in the park with our friends.
I’d like you to make a list of all the things that you miss. You may like to think about some of the following categories: – seeing family – seeing friends – day to day things – playing sports – exploring your interests – places you love to visit.
We will return to this list over the week.
Maths
This week we are going to think about line graphs. When would we use a line graph rather than a different type? What information does it show us?
I would like you to draw and add to a line graph over the course of the week, as you collect the data to record. Your line graph is going to show 3 sets of data (which will show in 3 different lines) showing the difference in temperature over the course of the day.
Today, you will need to choose 3 different times of the day, spread throughout the day if possible, and record the temperature. This can be either done using a thermometer or, you will find that lots of devices will give you the current temperature, you can record using one of these too. Remember to keep this information safe until you have plotted it on your graph.
Growing Vegetables
As the weather has been nice, I have spent some time in my garden and thought about clearing the weeds to plant some vegetables. I’d like us all to think about growing something this week. If you do not have a garden or seeds to plant do not worry. It is amazing what you can re-grow from the peelings/waste that you would normally throw away. Have a look at the link and see if you can choose one of the things to have a go at re-growing. It would be great to share the fruits of your labour through a picture diary of your vegetables – let’s find out which are the quickest and easiest to re-grow!

Wednesday 15th April – Chocolate Masterchef
Monday 13th April – Fancy a Trip?
Good Morning Everyone.
We know that you would normally be getting out and about during our holidays, visiting exciting places so we thought we’d bring those places to you.
If you would like to take a virtual trip jump aboard and choose a destination. You could investigate the interesting exhibitions at the Louvre https://www.louvre.fr/en/visites-en-ligne; take a tour around the National History Museum https://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/virtual-museum.html or visit the animals at the zoo through their live cams https://www.kansascityzoo.org/animal-cams/ and https://www.seewinter.com/animals/webcams/mavis-rescue-hideaway-cam/b.
For the more daring, you can even have a go on a virtual rollercoaster at https://hellogiggles.com/news/virtual-roller-coaster-rides/
You might even want to tell us what you have been to see, we’d love to hear. If people visit at different times of the day we may all see different things – I loved the waddle of penguins.
Friday 10th April
Hi there Discoverers and Leaders,
We have loved seeing your decorated eggs on Tapestry, they have been very creative and detailed. We’re looking forward to seeing more in the run up to Easter Sunday.
Your final task this week, is to build a den. Why is everything more exciting when it’s completed in a den? You can build it indoors or outdoors, and use things such as cushions, throws, sticks, chairs and even any cardboard you may have. It would be amazing if your whole family could fit inside, and perhaps enjoys a story together: You might like to read a story that you have written, or a book that you have at home. We can’t wait to see your creations! Here are some examples:
Lastly, well done for your efforts so far this week, and keep up with the fantastic job you’re doing on Sumdog, we love seeing how well you’re doing.

Wednesday 8th April
Good morning everybody,
How did you get on with your exercise challenge? Did you manage to get you whole household involved? I have heard that some of you have been very persuasive with getting everybody to join in, well done!
Today, myself and Mrs Walker thought that you might like a task that is Easter-themed, as it is Easter on Sunday! We would like you to decorate an egg (or anything of similar shape). You can decorate just the egg itself, or you could even create a background for it, and really set the scene. Here are some examples for you:
If you would like to share your results with us, you could upload pictures of your creations on Tapestry.
Thank you
Mrs Taylor and Mrs Walker
Happy Holidays

Good morning Leaders and Discoverers
We have been so impressed with all the things you have been doing with your families this week so, once you have finished off any activities that need completing, we are asking everyone in the school to have a go at telling and writing stories.
Have a look at Mrs Hann’s video of her story cubes and then have a go at telling a story using the cubes to help you. You might want to make up a story to tell to someone else in your family using the cubes and then ask them to tell a story using the cubes too. You will be surprised how many different stories you could make using the same cubes.
If you would like to share your stories with us that would be brilliant; you could video your story telling or write your story, if you wish, and upload it to Tapestry. Can’t wait to see them.
Happy story telling!
Mrs Walker and Mrs Taylor
