An awesome week!

Wow, what a week we’ve had!

On Monday, we had lots of discussion around Harvest Time and vegetables. We excitedly prepared for the visit of David Atherton, the British Bake-off winner of 2019, who is visiting on Friday.

We all enjoyed a visit to the Church on Tuesday. This was the first visit in a long while and the children thought the visit was “awesome”. We were joined by Father Michael who showed us around the Church and led us in a prayer of thankfulness.

In DT this week, we have been joining textiles using knots and loops. This was great fun and became a challenge in itself to join together all our pieces of material – there was a wonderful sense of  teamwork in class, which contributed to our success.

Our Reading Together Day on Thursday, was a great success! We had full day of reading stories and sharing books. We enjoyed a visit from Adele from Whitby Library, who informed us of an up-and-coming Christmas Reading Challenge – details to follow. We had some mystery story-tellers, throughout the day, who shared their favourite stories with us. What a happy day!

What a wonderful half-term we have had.

Learners’ Class love books!

Have a lovely half-term holiday!

Learners love reading!

This week, we have been so excited to bring in our books from home and share them together. It has prompted a discussion in class, which has resulted in us organising a Reading Together Day. On Thursday 21st October we will immerse ourselves in books, poetry and reading for the whole day. We will share stories, talk about characters and settings and explain why our favourite books ARE our favourite books. Please bring a book from home on this day if you would like to – also there may be a few surprise storytellers through the day! “Reading is a passport to countless adventures”. We are very excited!

Also this week, we have been using our knowledge of London to create an autobiographical piece of writing, which focuses on a character of our choice living in London. We have created pieces of writing from a London guard, a child in London and even the Queen herself – each piece of writing is individual and unique (just how we like it!).

In History, we have been learning how toys have changed over time. Of course we couldn’t resist and just had to make our own “old toy” –  a cup and ball game, with paper cups, string and foil. These created so much fun and laughter in class. Some things just don’t go out of fashion!

We always have a buzz for learning and just love to learn!

Learners Class

Learners are mathematicians!

We have been working hard in maths this week, learning addition facts and inverse operations. we’ve practised every day and by the end of the week we’ve cracked it! Such an achievement!

In English, we have focused in on London (as we have been so interested to learn more). We have immersed ourselves in London’s landmarks using drone footage. This has inspired us to write about where we would visit if we were to spend the day in London and why we would choose to do so.

In Science, we have found out what makes day and night happen. We used torches and globes to demonstrate how the sun shines on the Earth as it rotates – we found this fascinating!

We have shared stories together as always and have particularly enjoyed Katie in London by James Mayhew this week.

We love books in Learners Class!

Autumn’s in the air!

We have felt very Autumnal this week in Learners’ Class. We were so thankful that we probably had the only sunny day this week as our Forest School day. We had our scientific hats on as we collected as many leaves as we could, then discussed in teams how we wanted to sort them into groups. Each team chose a different way to sort them. We had “smooth leaves” and “spiky leaves”, “sycamore leaves” and “oak leaves”, “big leaves” and ” small leaves” and “green leaves”, “orange leaves”  and “green/orange mix leaves”. Our teamwork was amazing and we worked collaboratively together.

We have also delighted in studying the tree outside our classroom in Science this week. We produced some outstanding drawings of the tree in Autumn and we will be watching our tree change through each of the seasons.

In History, we have been learning what a timeline is and how we use them. We even created a timeline of our own life events starting with the year we were born and ending a present day. We found this quite fascinating!

We have been enjoying reading books from The Family Large series this week – by Jill Murphy. I think our Friday vote will be quite interesting this week – I wonder which story will prove the favourite?

We are really enjoying our research of The United Kingdom – our knowledge is deepening each day. We have been writing down interesting facts all week and are nearly ready to put together a Learners’ Class Report of the United Kingdom – watch this space!

Learners love learning!

Learners definitely do love learning! We have been learning more about number this week in maths. We have used the language of greater than/ less than, one more and one less to help us deepen our understanding of number.

We have discussed thankfulness in Collective Worship and thought about the things we are thankful for and in turn felt quite special to think that our friends and families are thankful for us.

In Geography, we have really enjoyed learning about the United Kingdom this week and can now confidently name and identify where each of the four countries are on the UK map. We discussed the meaning of capital cities and really enjoyed watching a drone video over London. We delighted in identifying landmarks we knew. We were particularly fascinated by the London Eye and so found a video of a tour on the London Eye and couldn’t believe how big it was. This information will inspire our writing in English over the coming week.

Multi skills on Wednesday was a great success. It was wonderful to see everyone smiling and enjoying themselves and it was such a treat for us to go out on the bus. I was so proud of how Learners’ class were so confident, well -behaved and keen to join in – such a credit to Sleights School.

Just a usual, busy week in our class – keep up the good work Learners!

Have a great weekend,

Mrs Brown

A busy and happy week!

Wow! what successful week Learners’ Class have had. It has been our first full week as a new class and we have achieved so much together.

We have introduced our new Prayer space activity and have enjoyed making lists and drawing pictures about the things in our own lives that we are thankful for.

“Dance was awesome this week, I can’t wait for next week”. It’s safe to say we all enjoyed our first dance session. We could link our music topic too – beat and pulse – and enjoyed walking and clapping to the beat of the music.

We have been busy drawing maps of the school grounds to aid our writing this week and are writing instructions to help others use a map.

We delighted in using compasses outside in the fresh air to help us locate North, South, East and West. We found out which direction the Sun moves across the sky each day. If you ask us, we can now tell you which direction the Sun rises each morning and sets each evening! We were fascinated by this!

We have enjoyed lots of stories together and always enjoy voting for our favourite book of the week on Fridays!

What a busy and wonderful week.

A wonderful first week!

Learners class have settled back into school life with such ease this week! I am so proud of how grown-up they have come in to school each morning. It feels like Year 1 have always been a part of Learners class and the Year 2’s have made them feel so welcome. It has been lovely to see. We are proving to be a great team already! This term in History, we are thinking about changes over time. This week, we have had a go at writing using feathers and ink – its trickier than you might think! In Science we have learned a little bit more about the sun, luckily it has been shining all week to help us with our learning. We are excited to begin using our loom to weave in class and have been practising our skills with some paper weaving. On Thursday afternoon, we had PE on the field and delighted in practising our jumping and leaping techniques.

We have enjoyed playing and exploring our classroom this week and most importantly everyone’s face has been a happy one! What a start Learners!

In English today we are thinking about our whole School book ‘What we’ll build’. Today, we are going to design and label our own Time Machine, in order that we will build our own! Think about what features your Time Machine may need? A clock? a start switch? a voice recorder? What else can you think of?

https://youtu.be/J1fhxgCJeN0

In Phonics we will be thinking about the sound ow/ou – These different spellings make the same sound. Can you make a list of words that contain the ow/ou sound. You may need to talk with an adult to find out which spelling is needed.

https://youtu.be/r542pAbTG4U

In Science, we are thinking about Light! Where does light come from? Our biggest source of light is the sun. Can you think of anymore sources of light? Let’s investigate how important light is today. Try reading your book in areas that are light and areas that are dark ie under the covers! see how this affects your reading!
