Monday 4th May 2020

Happy Monday Discoverers,

I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend, what did you get up to? I finally cut my grass!

In English, you finished writing your fabulous stories last week, and although we are now going to move on, we are still going to use the short film ‘adrift’ to help us. You are all familiar with the video now, which makes it easier for you to focus on the writing. I want us to look at speech this week.

Firstly, today I would like you to create an emotion graph. This is where you plot how Jane (or your character) is feeling, at different points in the story. I have plotted an emotion for every paragraph, you may decide to plot an emotion for the beginning, middle and end of your story. Here is my example to help you:

Today, in maths, I have given you your answers for Friday’s questions, and I have again set you another eight. We are continuing to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division this week. Let me know if you have any questions.

I have also included a bonus question, can you rise to the challenge?

We are going to focus on French, during our foundation subject this week. We will be looking at ‘days of the week’. Today, I would like you to watch the video, which helps you to say, and write the days of the week in French. And then I would like you to create a poster of the word Monday in French, and place this in your home somewhere for all to see. At the end of the week, I thought you might like to give your family a quiz, and see if they remember how to say the different days in French.

Enjoy your day, speak soon,

Mrs Taylor

Slugs and Snails-Our Theme for the Week

These words are tricky and your Pioneer will need help to work on these.
Post them around the house. Make them with play dough. Write them in flour…if you have any! Scratch them in the mud.
Put them on the mirror in lipstick.
Have fun.

Don’t forget to repeat all the letter shapes you have done already.
Happy Writing

Alongside the Bug Quiz book,I thought it would be nice to have a focus on some of our garden dwellers.
We can begin the week with snails. Here is a little video to get youstarted.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/mini-beast-adventure-with-jess-snail-adventure

Pop out into the garden and have a look for some snails. I have found one next to a down pipe where it is cool and dark and damp.
Where can you find snails?

Here is a new reading book for this week. This one is non-fiction and it is good to point out all the features in the text.
Have a chat about the index and  use it to find information. Point out the questions and the labels and discuss arrows and lines to join text and pictures. Use the contents page and the page numbers.
Go to YouTube and look at Geraldine for ‘qu’ to revise.
Have your sound mat handy to help with all the sounds.
Enjoy
Happy Reading

Maths Magic

So here is a little interesting problem for you:
In my garden I saw 12 legs. Which animals could they be?
Explain your answer. Perhaps you could use little animals and draw pictures .
You might like to write the number of legs next to each animal and write a number sentence for the total.

Remember to do some daily estimation and practise writing your numbers.
Do 20 claps,20 star jumps and 20 squats.
Dance along to our favourite counting video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKvgwVAGSgw

And watch an episode of Numberblocks to get ready for your maths magic.

Friday 1st May

Good morning Adventurers,

Is Friday and the start of a new Month. We can’t believe it is May already!

Today’s suggestive activities are as follows…

English

You’ve all created some wonderful superheroes and ideas for your comic, great work!
I really enjoyed turning my storyboard into a comic story: ‘Silver Moon Shadow saves the night! Why don’t you give it a go? Remember to include: sound effects, colourful pictures, speech bubbles and your motto – all the features of a good comic story.
I can’t wait to see your work!
You might like to make a superhero family using a simple aeroplane design then fly them together.

Maths

I would like you to make a maths game to play with your family members.
You can make up your own game or I have uploaded some templates in which you could use.
Can you write some addition and subtraction questions for your family to answer and think of some rules for the game?

There are some nice ideas on this website and I have added some ideas above too to help you.

https://garyhall.org.uk/make-maths-board-games.html

I hope you have fun doing this!

Science

Recently in science, you have been identify and sorting materials based on their properties.
Today, I would like to move onto states of matter. There are 3 states of matter – solid, liquid and gas.
Watch this clip about them and then learn about how we can change the states of matter by either heating or cooling.
There is a sorting activity for you to have a go at then at little investigation you do with an adult it you wish.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z6j2mfr

More information about these activities is on tapestry. Mrs Roe will also be uploading a story to tapestry this afternoon so keep an eye out for that.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend. I (Mrs Burton), plan on getting out on a nice long walk with my children and my dog, Ozzy but I think we might need our waterproofs on!

Friday 1st May 2020

Good Morning Leaders.

It’s May already!

Year 6 – you would normally be on the final run up to SATS but we already know that, this year, is very different… or is it.  At Sleights, we know that SATS are a very small part of your journey and the fun you’ve had along the way and both the memories and friends made are just as important.  You are all uniquely different and that’s what makes you special.

I miss every one of you but have been honoured to share your lockdown journeys through videos, photos and conversations with you and your families.  Remember, your classmates are also missing you too so, keep sending in those ‘hellos’ and I will try and put them together for next week.

English

You should have the start of your story done and I’d like you to spend today getting to the end your story.

Where does your magical door lead? Can you get back or maybe you stay through the door?

Maths

Problem Solving

Look at the problems, decide what operation you need to do and then solve the answer.

Once you have solved the problems, look at the questions again and identify any information that you did not need to solve the problem (it may have just been put in there to try and catch you out!).

Story Setting

It’s Friday again already!

I’d like you to have a go at making one or more of your story settings over the next few days. You can do this either inside or outside and can use anything you like – have a look at the examples.

You might want to use natural resources, recycling or just art and craft materials that you already have. You might also decide to use Lego, Playmobil or other figures that you already have at home.

Please remember to take pictures of your setting (unless you are going to leave it all made) as we will be using these next week.

It’s Friday! – 1st May

Good morning everyone!

Its is Friday today and it is also the new month of May.

Todays suggested learning is as follows;- (see Tapestry for more details)

In maths, I have added some links to Top Marks focusing on addition ad subtraction. If you haven’t accessed Top Marks before, give it a try – its lots of fun!

In English, we are going to write the second bit of our story – the middle – our character will set off on their adventure, where will they go and who will they meet?

In phonics today, we will look at the ph sound. This sound is in words like elephant, dolphin and phonics! Click on the document through Tapestry and see which real or pseudo words you can read.

DT – Let’s design and make a healthy sandwich today. Remember it is important to design it first and to think about the ingredients and utensils you will need. Also to think about how your sandwich is healthy. We have done this in class before so you will be experts!

Look out for our final story of the week tonight. Over the weekend I will send out a reminder of all five stories this week and we can vote for our favourite – just like we do in class.

Keep in touch with me on Tapestry whatever you are doing today and remember when you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine.

Keep smiling and have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Brown

Friday 1st May 2020

Hello Discoverers,

It’s the beginning of a new month today, and the end of our week. I hope that you have some nice things planned for the weekend. I know that I am going to be taking Indie on some long walks, and I’m going to try making a butternut squash, spinach and feta tart. I’ll let you know how it goes.

In English today, it would be great if you could finish writing your story. Follow yesterday’s instruction for writing your final paragraph/s. If you have already finished, why don’t you film yourself reading it, and upload it to tapestry for me to see. Or you could even take a photo of your story and upload that. The ones that I read yesterday were brilliant!

If you want, you could arrange a bedtime story for your family tonight, and read them your finished version. I know that they will love it 😀

In maths, here are the answers for yesterday’s questions. Did anybody get full marks? I have also included the next set of questions, which I will share the answers for on Monday. Remember to read the questions carefully, make notes of any important information, and think about which operation you will need to use (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division).

Yesterday, in geography, you created fantastic posters, advertising your new attraction in Sleights. Today, I would like you to draw your attraction up close. You can use colours if you want, and try to add as much detail as you can.

Enjoy your Friday everybody,

Mrs Taylor

It’s Friday. Yipee!

Let’s start with maths. Odd and Even

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3uxBI9npas – NumberBlocks Odd and Even

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares -Number Square

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/helicopter-rescue
This one is always popular. Once you have found the number ask,” Is it odd or even?”

If you have lego you could sort a pile of blocks that are the same and build odd and even numberblock type shapes and compare them.
Write a pile of numbers onto squares of paper and sort into two piles

Number Slap
Set all your number cards on the table. Get a stopwatch. Get a grown up to time how long it takes for you to hit all the even numbers. Muddle them up and repeat. Compare your timings.
Now try with odd numbers.
If the weather is nice you could write the numbers in chalk and hit them with a water pistol or a wet sponge!
or if you have ping-pong balls or ballpool balls you can write the numbers on and draw them out of a bag and shout odd or even.

Remember Sumdog is set up for you too.
That’s Maths Magic.

Reading,Writing,Speaking,Listening

Often it can be tricky to write a text which suits the phonics the children have been taught. Here is a short suggestion which could be used for reading, writing or drawing alongside planting or just at the table.

Plant a Seed
1. Get a pot.
2. Get a seed.
3. Fill the pot with soil.
4. Pop in the seed.
5. Cover it with soil.
6. Add water.
7. Add soil.

You can draw some little pictures with each sentence to form a short story map.

And finally, here are two reading books to keep you going:

Happy Weekend To You All

THursday 30th April

Good morning Adventurers! We hope you are all ok. Don’t forget to send us your videos/photographs/messages for our hello video – it will be lovely to see you all your smiling faces! We have planned the following activities for you – we hope you enjoy doing them!

English

Are you ready to plan your story?
Today we are going to use a storyboard to draw and write the main events of our stories.
Think about the opening, build-up, problem, resolution and ending. All the stages for a super story!
I’ve loved seeing all your superhero work so far, well done!?
Good luck with your storyboards and enjoy your day.

Maths

Today Adventurers, I thought we would have a go at some word problems involving addition and subtraction. There are some questions if you head on over to tapestry.

Read the questions carefully and decide which operation you need to and then write the number sentence and the answers.

There is a sheet for the year 2 pupils and one for the year 3 pupils.

French

It’s that time of the week again – French Thursday! Last week I asked you to design a rainbow and label the colours in French.

This week, we will continue working on colours. I have added a sheet that will help you to identify the colours and support your pronunciation when saying the out loud. There is then a sheet with some colour names that have been jumbled up – can you figure out what each colour is? Don’t worry about printing the sheet off – you can just write the answers down on a piece of paper.

As always, there is more information on Tapestry and if you are doing your own work, that is great too.

We hope you have a lovely day.

Mrs Roe and Mrs Burton

Good Morning Thursday – 30th April

Hello everyone!

I can’t believe it is Thursday already!

I hope you are all well and happy! It was lovely to speak to some families yesterday, you are all doing an amazing job!

Today suggested Home Learning activities are;- – more details on Tapestry.

In Maths, we had fun with Sock Addition yesterday, today we are going to play Sock Subtraction – so take away instead of add!  In English we are going to start to write our own story. Just the beginning today, paying particular attention to your setting and your charachter (adding as much detail as possible). Phonics today concentrates on the wh sound – in words such at ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘wheel. Finally, in Geography there is a lovely video clip to watch all about the United Kingdom – I think you will enjoy it!

Keep cheerful and look after each other. Keep me posted with whatever you are doing, as I love to hear from you.

Look out for story number 4 tonight! – tomorrow will be the last one, then we can vote for our favourite!

Keep smiling!

Best wishes, Mrs Brown

Thursday 30th April 2020

Good Morning Leaders.

It has been fantastic talking to your families and finding out what you have been up to. Don’t forget you can send in your work, or anything you would like to share, on Tapestry or by e-mail. I love seeing all your achievements – you are very talented Leaders!!

English

You now have all the tools required to write your own story. You may like to write about a more traditional portal that leads you to a magical world, or you may prefer to draw upon your personal experiences, as we have explored throughout this unit.

To recap on all the key points we’ve been learning:

  1. Describe the portal in detail. You may want to show the portal through the eyes of the main character.
  2. Think about what lies on the other side of the door. Allow yourself the opportunity to write about what interests you and what is important to you.
  3. Great writers steal ideas (‘magpie’) from other great writers. Reflect upon the portal stories that you have loved reading and consider what made these so engaging. Try to bring in some of these skills and techniques into your own work.
  4. Enjoy it. Writing is all about sharing a passion for words, stories and the world of possibility. If you love the story you are writing – so too will your reader.

You don’t have to write all of your story today; we will be carrying on tomorrow to complete our stories.

Maths

Today we are going to look at division. Have a look at another Supermovers video to re-cap on the link between division facts.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks2-maths-division-with-homebros/zvsjbdm

How about a game? Have a go at this one, see how many coins and how far you can get in Cave run, using your division skills.

Finger Spelling – Sign Language

Fingerspelling is a way of spelling words using hand movements and is part of learning sign language. Each letter of the alphabet has a different sign. British Sign Language (BSL) uses a two-handed version.

Fingerspelling is only a part of learning sign language but getting you to learn your name would be a great start. Have a look at the posters for the letters you need (there is a left-handed and right-handed version) and see if you can have a go. Upload a video of you signing your name.
