Tuesday News – 9th June

Good morning everyone, I hope you are all well.

This morning is bright, the sun is shining again after the rain just like in our story ‘Rain Before Rainbows’

Today’s suggested learning on Tapestry is as follows;-

In Maths, there is a fun Place Value activity to do.

In English, we will think about performance. Maybe you can perform a part of our story today!

In Phonics, there’s a fun game to play.

In Science, thinking about our story and the line ‘Night before daybreak’ also linked to last night’s story, let’s study the Moon a little closer.

Also see my short video on Tapestry of a paraglider, I spotted yesterday, on Whitby Cliff!

Enjoy the sunshine today and keep smiling šŸ™‚

Best wishes,

Mrs Brown

Good Morning Adventurers – the sun is shining again!

Well, I think we managed to blow the rain clouds away and the sun has returned!

Did you enjoy our new book ‘Rain Before Rainbows’? It’s a beautiful book and it was lovely to hear some of your thoughts about it.

I feel all refreshed after a miserable weekend and ready to tackle some new learning, so here’s today’s activities if you wish to try them. (More details on Tapestry)

Handwriting – practise the letter ‘Mm’

English – using the text ‘Rain Before Rainbows’ think of words to describe rain and rainbows and display them on a mobile. You might try to put these words into some descriptive sentences.

Join me to read together ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ By Judith Kerr.

Maths – Key skills for Year 2 and Year 3 then draw a 2D shape street. Include lots of different 2D shapes to make houses, trees and roads. We will look again at right angles and parallel lines so you can highlight these on your street.

Music – make two different musical instruments, using materials from around the house, to accompany the music ‘Sea interlude 4 storm’ by Leonard Berstein Britten and ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ performed by The Royal Philarmonic Orchestra.

Science – Make your own rainbow.

I think you could have a very busy day!

But hope you have a lovely day.

Mrs Roe

Tuesday is the Best Day Ever Pioneers!

At dinner every evening we have a big question to discuss. Some of the other teachers have also asked their children some difficult questions about life, the universe and everything.

I thought that the Pioneers might give some great answers to some of life’s big questions.

I’d love to hear their answers.

So here is your first one…

“What is the best thing? ….Ever…? …Right now…?
so that is possibly three questions!

Here are a few suggestions for some simple percussion options. Open up your cupboard and dig out the lentils.
Brew up a storm in your own kitchen.
This may give you another opportunity to talk about classification of materials.
Use the sentence starters,”I wonder…” And “What happens if/when..?”

Here is a link to another wild piece of music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQhpWsRhQGs&list=RDFQhpWsRhQGs&start_radio=1&t=2338
My best bit is at about 37 minutes. It’s reallly loud and storm then.

Happy drumming.

Fred,Ted and Tim like peaches.
They start with 12 peaches.
Time eats 2
Fred eats 3.
Ted eats 4.
How many peaches are left?
You can try this problem in many ways.
It can be done setting stuff out and talking it through.
You can write the number sentences.
You can start with the number of peaches left and work back:
There are 3 peaches left. How many did we start with?
Try this out with different starting numbers and distributions of stuff.
Draw pictures. Talk. Write.
Ask “I wonder…? ” and “What if…?”
Happy Maths

Here is your phonics suggestion today:
Take a look at the Phase 4 sheet from yesterday and have a go at the sounds together.
Revisit yesterday’s “tr” -read together.
Can your Pioneer recognise each word?
Talk
Listen
Read
Write
Copy
Spell
This is tricky.
Now have a look at “dr” and do the same.
Happy learning

Good morning Discoverers,

Yesterday, you listened to the teachers of Sleights read our new focus story to you. What did you think of it?

As we are going to be looking at this book over the coming weeks, I thought it would be nice for you to familiarise yourself with the main themes within it.

The book talks about night and day, and today, I would like you to create a map which includes all the things that you can think of, that are different at night than they are during the day. For example: the animals that come out, the temperature, the light etc.

Here are the answers to yesterday’s questions. Did you find them easy?

Today in maths, we are going to be looking at different amounts of money. I want you to draw, or place coins, next to the different amounts, which make the total exactly.

For example: for the amount of Ā£1.25, I could draw a Ā£1, 20p and 5p.

Today in science, we are going to be grouping animals, based on if they are vertebrates or an invertebrates.

Watch today’s video, and this will help you understand the difference: vertebrates have spines and invertebrates don’t.

I would like you to draw some examples of both types of animal. You might like to separate them on to different sides of your paper, or label each one.

If you would prefer, you could write the name of the animal instead of drawing it.

Have a great day everybody,

Mrs Taylor

Good Morning Leaders

Although not quite as sunny, at least it was dry yesterday, I hope you all managed to get outside for a walk again.

All the rain will make the plants grow but unfortunately, it will also make the weeds grow too so you might need to top up your knowledge on which are weeds and which are your seedlings.

We will all have grown very green fingers if our plants produce fruit and flowers. ??

Rain Before Rainbows ā€“ English

Many of you have taken part in the Eskdale Festival at some point and I would like us to imagine you are taking part in your own festival today.

Adding you list to the lines from yesterday, read your additional lines aloud.

Have a go at videoing yourself and watch it back ā€“ you might want to do this more than once to see I if you can make your expression or fluency better.

Upload your video if you would like to, Iā€™d love to see you performing your new lines.

Money – Maths

Think about the difference between a need and a want.

Today, look at the notes and split them into the categories of need and want. Can you name anything where the distinction between a need and a want is not always clear?

Night Before Daybreak – Geography

I would like you to pick a time of the day and then record what time it is in different countries at the same time. Pick 9 other countries to put in your list.

Is there a pattern to the times in different countries? Follow the link to find out more about time zones.

Monday-A New Week. 8th June

Good morning everyone! It’s Monday, a new week and a fresh start!

Today we are launching our new whole school book ‘Rain Before Rainbows’. This wonderful book will inspire our creative learning over the coming weeks! – see Tapestry for the launch today!

With the book in mind I would like you to reflect upon the book today, listen and take in the words.

Some further suggested activities on Tapestry are as follows ;-

In English, I would like you to think of some wonderful weather words – we have had a lot of stormy weather this weekend so you will have lots of inspiration.

In Maths, there are some word problems today! Take your time with these and don’t rush!

In Phonics there are some captions and pictures to match!

In RE, a question to discuss today. Set aside some time and talk.

I hope you have had a good weekend despite the rain!

Keep in touch as always and don’t forget to smile šŸ™‚

Best wishes,

Mrs Brown

Good Morning Adventurers – it’s back to school Monday!

I hope you managed to enjoy your weekend despite the horrible weather!

Well lets banish those rain clouds and start the school week with a sunny smile.

I’m really excited as the teachers got together (virtually) to share a lovely new book with you on Tapestry called ‘Rain Before Rainbows’ by Smriti Hall which we are going to base our work around for the next few weeks. So have a listen then read it yourself.

Did you sign up for the library challenge? There’s still time and reading Rain Before Rainbows is a good start to the challenge.

Here’s today’s activities if you wish to try them. (More details on Tapestry)

Handwriting – practise the letter ‘Nn’

English – listen to then read the story ‘Rain Before Rainbows’ then respond with your thoughts about the book. You can record a video of you talking about the book or make a talking head and thoughts and feelings box in which you can write down your thoughts and post them in the box.

Maths – Key Skills for Year 2 and Year 3 then draw 2D shapes ad describe their properties.

There’s quite a lot of craft activities involved in English today which I hope you will enjoy. I really liked making my talking head and thoughts and feelings box and I look forward to seeing yours.

Have a lovely day.

Happy Monday Discoverers,

How was your weekend in the not-so-sunny weather? I hope that you managed to find some fun activities to keep you entertained.

We are at the beginning of a new week, and in English, we are starting something new.

Over the coming weeks, we are going to be focusing on a beautiful book, called ‘Rain Before Rainbows’ by Smriti Halls.

Here are the teachers of Sleights, reading the book to you.

Today, I would simply like you to listen to this story, and think about what you like about it.

You could write comments about how it makes you feel, or what it makes you think about. Or you could even read the book yourself, and use expression to show your feelings.

In Maths this week, we are going to be focusing on money. Today, I have written some questions for you. I would like you to convert the amounts of pence, into pounds.

I have shown you how to do this in the first example.

As there are 100p in Ā£1.00, whenever you convert pence into pounds, you simply divide the amount by 100, and this gives you your answer.

Here is the answer from Friday’s question also.

We are continuing with science as our foundation subject this week. There is such much more about plants that we can learn.

Today, we are going to be learning how to classify and group plants, and we are going to focus particularly on separating ones that have seeds, and ones that don’t.

I would like you to watch this video firstly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgVlrtGnG6s&feature=emb_logo

Now, you could use the internet to research different plants, or go for a walk, or even into your garden if you have any, and observe the different plants that you see.

Then, you can draw or write the plants into two categories, one for plants with seeds, and one for plants without seeds.

Here are some plants without seeds to get your started:

Have a great day everybody,

Mrs Taylor

Good Monday Morning Pioneers

https://stayhome.walker.co.uk/rainbows/pdf/Rain_Before_Rainbows.pdf

Here is the link to the most beautiful book. The teachers read the book together. Once you have watched the video of us,take a look at the wonderful illustrations and have a chat about it.

What are your comments?
What do you think?
Which is the best bit for you?

Happy Reading

The weather this weekend has been fantastic. I love the wind and the rain.
Mr Wolf would certainly have needed an waterproof coat and a strong pair of boots to get through this storm.

Today I would like to share with you some music to listen to and enjoy.
I the classroom, your Pioneer has their own conducting stick or baton and we have discussed the role of the conductor. I would like to suggest finding a baton and conducting the orchestra.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02b5b25

This is The Storm-an interlude from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten.

You can talk about all of the instruments and make some of your own too.
I will be adding ideas over the week,on how to do this.

Enjoy.

The Animals are standing in a queue waiting to take their turn.

The Fox is getting bored and wants to know how many people there are in the queue.

His mum says,”There are 3 behind you and 4 in front of you. How many animals are there altogether?”

The Fox scratches his head and had a think. “I do believe I may have to draw a picture to work it out!”

Pioneers, can you draw a picture, use stuff and write the number sentences to help him.

Could you make up another one for your grown ups to do.

I love this problem.

That’s Maths Magic.

“tr” can sound like “chr” so it is a tricky one.
Have a go at reading these “tr” words and the sentence.
If you feel particularly confident you could have a go at writing these for yourself.
Spelling is more difficult than reading.
Keep your sound mat next to you.
Have a look at the Phase 4 sound mat too and start to get to know your way around it.
You will find this on one of the other posts today “Words to Work on”
Have fun

Good Morning Leaders

I hope you have all had a good weekend albeit much colder than it has been recently. The gardens will be thankful although let’s hope the sun returns soon.

We are going to be using a beautiful book called ‘Rain before Rainbows’ for some of our learning and we will be investigating the themes that it contains. You might have seen a rainbow over the weekend, heard thunder or even seen hailstones (in June!). There will be lots of things to talk about and we will start off today with a ‘big question’.

Happy chatting.?

Rain Before Rainbows ā€“ English

This week we are going to be using a beautiful book called ‘Rain Before Rainbows’ which you can hear being fully read on a different post.

Here are a few lines from the book;

Rain before rainbows, Clouds before sun.

Night before daybreak. The old day is done.

See if you can find any other pairs of things where one would come before the other. Make a list of the ones you can think of.

Money – Maths

This week we are going to be focussing on money and using some of the MoneySense activities from NatWest

Today, you are going to find out more about how a bank works. Use the link below to find out more.

https://natwest.mymoneysense.com/students/students-8-12/how-a-bank-works/

Big Questions

Having time at home and being made to slow down often makes us look at things more closely. It makes us ask questions and notice smaller things that we might not notice in our busy lives.

Today, I’d like you to talk about one of these big questions with your family. Remember that not everyone might have the same answer or opinion.

Where in the world would you like to be right now? Why?

There is no need to record anything, just take time to talk to each other.
