Hello Learners and families!

I hope you all had a good weekend! The sun did manage to come out after all, which was a bonus! It is forecast to come back out after a little rain this morning!

Don’t forget today is Voting Day for us! Check in to Tapestry and vote for your favourite story read last week – its very easy!

Todays suggested learning is as follows;- (details on Tapestry)

In Maths, we are counting in 2s today! Use socks, pasta or whatever you have around to help you.

In English, we are completing our story. We have done all the preparation, now its time to complete it. Don’t worry if you didn’t start this last week, there is a lovely story clip for you to watch and talk about!

In Phonics we are looking at the oe sound – in words such as toe, woe and Mrs Roe!

Its Music Time – Yes Mrs Brown is indulging herself with sharing her love of musicals with you! Today, here’s a lovely song from The Sound of Music for you to listen to, sing along with and enjoy!

Remember, to keep smiling whatever it is you are doing. Keep sending pictures, videos and messages on Tapestry! I think you are all doing an amazing job!

Good Morning Adventurers and a Happy Monday to you!

Over the next few weeks I would just like to share some of my thoughts from the beautiful walks I’ve had.

‘ The world is filled with wonder and beauty. We just need to step out and take a look’ 

It would be lovely if we could all share our photos and thoughts for the day to create a class book for when we meet again soon.

Well it’s back to school Monday and I have a packed day of lessons for you, just like at school! (More details are on Tapestry)

Please pick and choose as you wish but I love seeing all the work and activities you have been doing.

First, some handwriting to start the day – concentrate on Bb

Maths – Let’s start with some key skills. Time yourself! Can you answer 10 questions in 10 minutes?

               Next, a multiplication challenge. Can you learn a new times table by Friday? Year 2 try 2, 3, 5 or 4

               Year 3 try 3, 4, 6 or 8. You choose and you could even make a trophy for yourself.

               Then, complete the multiplication questions I’ve set on tapestry.

English – Reading and writing this week is based on one of our favourite books from last year ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett.

We can complete some reading together and a writing task. Write a postcard from Sunny explaining why he is leaving home to find the PERFECT place to live.

Science – Enjoy a nature walk with your family. Pick some wild flowers then find out their names and label them.

( My mum is an expert at this!)

Happy Monday Discoverers,

I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend, what did you get up to? I finally cut my grass!

In English, you finished writing your fabulous stories last week, and although we are now going to move on, we are still going to use the short film ‘adrift’ to help us. You are all familiar with the video now, which makes it easier for you to focus on the writing. I want us to look at speech this week. 

Firstly, today I would like you to create an emotion graph. This is where you plot how Jane (or your character) is feeling, at different points in the story. I have plotted an emotion for every paragraph, you may decide to plot an emotion for the beginning, middle and end of your story. Here is my example to help you:

Today, in maths, I have given you your answers for Friday’s questions, and I have again set you another eight. We are continuing to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division this week. Let me know if you have any questions. 

I have also included a bonus question, can you rise to the challenge? 

We are going to focus on French, during our foundation subject this week. We will be looking at ‘days of the week’. Today, I would like you to watch the video, which helps you to say, and write the days of the week in French. And then I would like you to create a poster of the word Monday in French, and place this in your home somewhere for all to see. At the end of the week, I thought you might like to give your family a quiz, and see if they remember how to say the different days in French.

Slugs and Snails-Our Theme for the Week

These words are tricky and your Pioneer will need help to work on these.
Post them around the house. Make them with play dough. Write them in flour…if you have any! Scratch them in the mud.
Put them on the mirror in lipstick.
Have fun.

Alongside the Bug Quiz book,I thought it would be nice to have a focus on some of our garden dwellers.
We can begin the week with snails. Here is a little video to get youstarted.

Pop out into the garden and have a look for some snails. I have found one next to a down pipe where it is cool and dark and damp.
Where can you find snails?

Here is a new reading book for this week. This one is non-fiction and it is good to point out all the features in the text.
Have a chat about the index and  use it to find information. Point out the questions and the labels and discuss arrows and lines to join text and pictures. Use the contents page and the page numbers.
Go to YouTube and look at Geraldine for ‘qu’ to revise.
Have your sound mat handy to help with all the sounds.

Maths Magic

So here is a little interesting problem for you:
In my garden I saw 12 legs. Which animals could they be?
Explain your answer. Perhaps you could use little animals and draw pictures .
You might like to write the number of legs next to each animal and write a number sentence for the total.

Remember to do some daily estimation and practise writing your numbers.
Do 20 claps,20 star jumps and 20 squats.

Good morning Adventurers,

Is Friday and the start of a new Month. We can’t believe it is May already!

Today’s suggestive activities are as follows…

English 

You’ve all created some wonderful superheroes and ideas for your comic, great work!
I really enjoyed turning my storyboard into a comic story: ‘Silver Moon Shadow saves the night! Why don’t you give it a go? Remember to include: sound effects, colourful pictures, speech bubbles and your motto – all the features of a good comic story.
I can’t wait to see your work!
You might like to make a superhero family using a simple aeroplane design then fly them together.

 

Maths  

I would like you to make a maths game to play with your family members.
You can make up your own game or I have uploaded some templates in which you could use.
Can you write some addition and subtraction questions for your family to answer and think of some rules for the game?

Science

Recently in science, you have been identify and sorting materials based on their properties.
Today, I would like to move onto states of matter. There are 3 states of matter – solid, liquid and gas.
Watch this clip about them and then learn about how we can change the states of matter by either heating or cooling.
There is a sorting activity for you to have a go at then at little investigation you do with an adult it you wish.

Good Morning Leaders.

It’s May already! 

Year 6 – you would normally be on the final run up to SATS but we already know that, this year, is very different… or is it.  At Sleights, we know that SATS are a very small part of your journey and the fun you’ve had along the way and both the memories and friends made are just as important.  You are all uniquely different and that’s what makes you special. 

I miss every one of you but have been honoured to share your lockdown journeys through videos, photos and conversations with you and your families.  Remember, your classmates are also missing you too so, keep sending in those ‘hellos’ and I will try and put them together for next week.  

English

You should have the start of your story done and I’d like you to spend today getting to the end your story.

Where does your magical door lead? Can you get back or maybe you stay through the door?

Maths

Problem Solving

Look at the problems, decide what operation you need to do and then solve the answer.

Once you have solved the problems, look at the questions again and identify any information that you did not need to solve the problem (it may have just been put in there to try and catch you out!).

Story Setting

It’s Friday again already!

I’d like you to have a go at making one or more of your story settings over the next few days. You can do this either inside or outside and can use anything you like – have a look at the examples.

You might want to use natural resources, recycling or just art and craft materials that you already have. You might also decide to use Lego, Playmobil or other figures that you already have at home.

It’s Friday! – 1st May

Good morning everyone!

Its is Friday today and it is also the new month of May.

Todays suggested learning is as follows;- (see Tapestry for more details)

In maths, I have added some links to Top Marks focusing on addition ad subtraction. If you haven’t accessed Top Marks before, give it a try – its lots of fun!

In English, we are going to write the second bit of our story – the middle – our character will set off on their adventure, where will they go and who will they meet?

In phonics today, we will look at the ph sound. This sound is in words like elephant, dolphin and phonics! Click on the document through Tapestry and see which real or pseudo words you can read.

DT – Let’s design and make a healthy sandwich today. Remember it is important to design it first and to think about the ingredients and utensils you will need. Also to think about how your sandwich is healthy. We have done this in class before so you will be experts!

Look out for our final story of the week tonight. Over the weekend I will send out a reminder of all five stories this week and we can vote for our favourite – just like we do in class.

Hello Discoverers,

It’s the beginning of a new month today, and the end of our week. I hope that you have some nice things planned for the weekend. I know that I am going to be taking Indie on some long walks, and I’m going to try making a butternut squash, spinach and feta tart. I’ll let you know how it goes.

In English today, it would be great if you could finish writing your story. Follow yesterday’s instruction for writing your final paragraph/s. If you have already finished, why don’t you film yourself reading it, and upload it to tapestry for me to see. Or you could even take a photo of your story and upload that. The ones that I read yesterday were brilliant! 

If you want, you could arrange a bedtime story for your family tonight, and read them your finished version. I know that they will love it 😀

In maths, here are the answers for yesterday’s questions. Did anybody get full marks? I have also included the next set of questions, which I will share the answers for on Monday. Remember to read the questions carefully, make notes of any important information, and think about which operation you will need to use (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division). 

Yesterday, in geography, you created fantastic posters, advertising your new attraction in Sleights. Today, I would like you to draw your attraction up close. You can use colours if you want, and try to add as much detail as you can.

Let’s start with maths. Odd and Even

This one is always popular. Once you have found the number ask,” Is it odd or even?”

 

If you have lego you could sort a pile of blocks that are the same and build odd and even numberblock type shapes and compare them.
Write a pile of numbers onto squares of paper and sort into two piles

 

Number Slap
Set all your number cards on the table. Get a stopwatch. Get a grown up to time how long it takes for you to hit all the even numbers. Muddle them up and repeat. Compare your timings.
Now try with odd numbers.
If the weather is nice you could write the numbers in chalk and hit them with a water pistol or a wet sponge!
or if you have ping-pong balls or ballpool balls you can write the numbers on and draw them out of a bag and shout odd or even.

Remember Sumdog is set up for you too.

Reading,Writing,Speaking,Listening

Often it can be tricky to write a text which suits the phonics the children have been taught. Here is a short suggestion which could be used for reading,writing or drawing alongside planting or just at the table.

Plant a Seed
1. Get a pot.
2. Get a seed.
3. Fill the pot with soil.
4. Pop in the seed.
5. Cover it with soil.
6. Add water.
7. Add soil.

You can draw some little pictures with each sentence to form a short story map.
