Pioneers Class

Pioneers children are Reception aged (four or five years old). Children enjoy a range of creative and engaging play based activities, as well as formal inputs, to support their development and growth. Children in Pioneers are taught by Mrs Hann, Mrs McGill and Miss Greaves.

Learning begins the minute they walk through the door. The classroom is a carefully curated collection of wonderful things to allow the children to flourish. The classroom is theirs and everything in it is there for a purpose. What they chose to do may be completely different for each individual. This is when the learning happens. The resources are ready to use and accessible and the team work together to create, to communicate, to count and to grow

Each day starts with exploration of the resources and suggestions for learning set out around the room. The Pioneers will come together for teaching. This will happen in small groups, as a whole class and often one to one. Across the day we will gather for mathematics, reading, writing and phonics sessions, to share stories and to learn about the world.

PE kits are in school all week to allow us to do PE at any time. This term, the Pioneers have dance on a Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Gurney teaches computing on a Thursday morning.

We are rolling with phonics and children will bring a book and their reading record home each day. Please read little and often and write a message in the reading record. All reading is good reading. This is such an exciting time.

Please look out for a text message to let you know when we will go to the forest. We will use our wonderful outdoor space as much as we can and this will not always be on the same day each week.

Children’s progress and activities are recorded in their own Learning Journeys. These act as a summary of the journey children embark upon during their time in Reception and demonstrate the progress and success that has been achieved, as well as the next steps that may need to be taken.

Here are your learning suggestions for Friday the 12th of June,Pioneer.Search for the Light.

I have shared this before but as we are looking at the moon and light and dark,it seemed like a good idea to share it again.
Happy Reading.

Count in 2s
I shared this earlier in the week but here it is again to support this worksheet.

https://bam.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/zbtrkxs/pdf#sa-link_location=blocks&intlink_from_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fz693rj6&intlink_ts=1591428045525-sa

If you have a printer then you could print it out otherwise you can just talk about it together.

Happy Maths
Have a lovely Friday.

This lovely little clip has some complicated vocabulary but it is very clear.

The moon is lit up by the sun.

The sun is the light source.

Take a walk around your house and look for sources of light.

Take some photographs and have a play on Piccollage to make a poster of light sources or try out a video and chat.

Happy Hunting

PhonicsPlay is a great website with a collection of games for your Pioneer.

Pop over to Tapestry to find suggestions for where to go and what to do .

Have a wonderful weekend,Happy People.

Our book for this week “Rain Before Rainbows” talks about day and night.

These short clips are perfect to introduce chat about this. It will also be a way in to the short text I have written for reading and writing too.

Enjoy

Here is a song that with stick in your head.

Happy Learning

https://www.google.com/moon/

You may have heard of Google Earth. We have used iti in the classroom and the children were fascinated however you may be unaware of Google Moon and even Google Mars.Have a whizz around the surface of the moon.It is incredible.

Happy Exploring Pioneers

This text is written for the Pioneers to read.
You could read this together.
Your Pioneer could have a try to read it.
If you learn the text and make a story map or do some pictures, you could try writing it for yourself.
Go slowly
Keep your sound mat handy and take a fresh look at Geraldine for “igh” and “oo”. if that would be fun.

Have a Tip Top Thursday Pioneers

Have a Magical Wednesday Pioneers

Take a look at the words on the list.
Read them through together.
Find “sp” on your sound mat.
Read the words from the “tr” list and the “dr” list.
Write them all on postits and sort them into piles.

Enjoy.Watch the videos and spell the words using the three sounds we have focussed on this week.
Can you add “dr”, “tr” or “sp”?
Enjoy

Count in 2s

For a bit of a change, here is a link to a worksheet for you to try.

Happy Counting

Here is another maths problem for you Pioneers, digging deeper into you magical maths thinking.
Look for the pattern.
I wonder…?
Tel me how you know.
Can you check?
Show a grown-up and tell them

“If I have 5 on under this finger, what is under my thumb?”

The grown ups will never know that you used maths. They will think you are a Mathemagician.
That’s Maths Magic!

How are you peeling?
If you haven’t already done so,take a look at my reading of How are you Peeling?
This ties in with the story on Monday called Rain Before Rainbows.
The fruit and vegetables all have feelings but naming those feelings can be tricky.
We have used this book in the classroom and it is always fun.
You could get carried away and make your own Food with moods!
Enjoy.

Tuesday is the Best Day Ever Pioneers!

At dinner every evening we have a big question to discuss. Some of the other teachers have also asked their children some difficult questions about life, the universe and everything.

I thought that the Pioneers might give some great answers to some of life’s big questions.

I’d love to hear their answers.

So here is your first one…

“What is the best thing? ….Ever…? …Right now…?
so that is possibly three questions!

Here are a few suggestions for some simple percussion options. Open up your cupboard and dig out the lentils.
Brew up a storm in your own kitchen.
This may give you another opportunity to talk about classification of materials.
Use the sentence starters,”I wonder…” And “What happens if/when..?”

Here is a link to another wild piece of music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQhpWsRhQGs&list=RDFQhpWsRhQGs&start_radio=1&t=2338
My best bit is at about 37 minutes. It’s reallly loud and storm then.

Happy drumming.

Fred,Ted and Tim like peaches.
They start with 12 peaches.
Time eats 2
Fred eats 3.
Ted eats 4.
How many peaches are left?
You can try this problem in many ways.
It can be done setting stuff out and talking it through.
You can write the number sentences.
You can start with the number of peaches left and work back:
There are 3 peaches left. How many did we start with?
Try this out with different starting numbers and distributions of stuff.
Draw pictures. Talk. Write.
Ask “I wonder…? ” and “What if…?”
Happy Maths

Here is your phonics suggestion today:
Take a look at the Phase 4 sheet from yesterday and have a go at the sounds together.
Revisit yesterday’s “tr” -read together.
Can your Pioneer recognise each word?
Talk
Listen
Read
Write
Copy
Spell
This is tricky.
Now have a look at “dr” and do the same.
Happy learning

Good Monday Morning Pioneers

https://stayhome.walker.co.uk/rainbows/pdf/Rain_Before_Rainbows.pdf

Here is the link to the most beautiful book. The teachers read the book together. Once you have watched the video of us,take a look at the wonderful illustrations and have a chat about it.

What are your comments?
What do you think?
Which is the best bit for you?

Happy Reading

The weather this weekend has been fantastic. I love the wind and the rain.
Mr Wolf would certainly have needed an waterproof coat and a strong pair of boots to get through this storm.

Today I would like to share with you some music to listen to and enjoy.
I the classroom, your Pioneer has their own conducting stick or baton and we have discussed the role of the conductor. I would like to suggest finding a baton and conducting the orchestra.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02b5b25

This is The Storm-an interlude from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten.

You can talk about all of the instruments and make some of your own too.
I will be adding ideas over the week,on how to do this.

Enjoy.

The Animals are standing in a queue waiting to take their turn.

The Fox is getting bored and wants to know how many people there are in the queue.

His mum says,”There are 3 behind you and 4 in front of you. How many animals are there altogether?”

The Fox scratches his head and had a think. “I do believe I may have to draw a picture to work it out!”

Pioneers, can you draw a picture, use stuff and write the number sentences to help him.

Could you make up another one for your grown ups to do.

I love this problem.

That’s Maths Magic.

“tr” can sound like “chr” so it is a tricky one.
Have a go at reading these “tr” words and the sentence.
If you feel particularly confident you could have a go at writing these for yourself.
Spelling is more difficult than reading.
Keep your sound mat next to you.
Have a look at the Phase 4 sound mat too and start to get to know your way around it.
You will find this on one of the other posts today “Words to Work on”
Have fun

Thursday’s Happy Learning for Pioneers

Get comfy!
This is not Mr Wolf’s Week but it is a peak into the world of the teachers in Explorers,Pioneers and Learners.
We wanted to let you see what they get up to from day to day. It is very special and we hope that you enjoy it.
You could have a go at making up a similar story for your family.
Share. Read. Enjoy.

Happy ReadingThis suggestion for learning is a a bit like Monday’s Days of the Week Suggestion.
There’s lots of ideas here to do with the months of the week.
Write out the months on postits.
Can you recognise and read each month?
Try this out:This month is……………..
Next month will be …………….
Last month was ………………..
The first month of the year is….
The last month is…….
My birthday is in …….
Christmas is in……………………….
This may lead on to chat about seasons.
That might be tricky.
Use the words for handwriting. Your Pioneer will spot the use of capital letters and see the difference in size when used together with the lowercase.
Use a selection of capital letters and ask your Pioneer to match the correct one with the correct month.
The spelling is very tricky. If they want to try writing them by themselves then that is great too.
Count the months.
Have a go at putting the months of the year in order
Here is a little rap to help you out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZD_BhtiXuU

This one is quite complex with lots of extra information and it is catchy. Enjoy

Here is the next episode of Mr Wolf’s Week written using phonics the Pioneers can use for reading and writing.
Try out making and discussing weather symbols.
Take a look at the weather forecast for some ideas.

This link allows you to pretend being a Weather Presenter. We have used it before in the classroom
Have fun.

Wednesday is a Great Day For Learning about Mr Puffin

You will have seen Mr Puffin with me in lots of my recent videos. He is quite happy here in Whitby but it is not his usual home. He lives on a cliff edge and flies out to sea for his food. He doesn’t eat pizza like me.He eats sand eels. Here are a few links so you can take a look at his real home.
Puffins are the best.

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/farne-islands/features/puffins-on-the-farne-islands#
Here you can see a chick emerging from an egg. This one is on the Farne Islands not so far from here.

https://www.shetlandwebcams.com/cliff-cam-3/
This is where I like to go on holiday. You are more likely to see a black headed gull or a gannet or a great skua here.

Let me know if you spot anything.
Happy Learning

The weather has changed and Mr Wolf will need some different clothes.
Take this opportunity to discuss weather symbols and words for weather.
Stand outside under an umbrella.
I have written out 3 texts, one for each day. perhaps your Pioneer could read these.
try sating other sentences for each day. Try them out and almost learn them in your head before having a go at any writing.
Enjoy the rain.

Here is your maths suggestion for learning for today.
It is using the clock face and this time it is subtraction,take-away,minus.
I love it.
Spot the combinations and write the number sentences.
Make up some of your own.
That’s Maths Magic.

Good Morning Pioneers-Tuesday 2nd June

https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/summer-reading-challenge-silly-squad

Every year the library run a reading challenge and this year is no different.
Click on the link to see what is on offer this year.
Time spent reading is never wasted.

Happy Reading

If you are finding reading on screen a bit difficult,I would like to suggest writing a few sentences of your own, using the phonics and tricky words.
Here is a quick outline of something which might be helpful.
This is linked to Mr Wolf’s Week.
Happy Reading

Take time to fill in your chart. Make symbols for each day. Write a sentence to say what you have done.
My sentence does say Mr Wolf. I am saving the sentences about me for tomorrow.
I have included a picture of the tricky words to help you out.

Mr Puffin joined me to look for patterns on the clock face.
He spotted pairs of numbers that go together to make 13.
Can you help him to spot some more?
Write out your number sentences.
Keep an eye open for more patterns.
Mr Puffin would love to hear how you are getting along.
That’s maths magic,Pioneers!

https://www.mathsisfun.com/games/dayofweek.html

Here is a little fun activity .
Do you know which day of the week you were born on Pioneers?
Put your details in and take a look.

You could do it for all the family, This will get your Pioneer talking about day and date, months and years.
It’s all Maths Magic

Welcome Back Pioneers. Are You Ready to Learn? Monday the 1st of June.

Well Pioneers, this really is Maths magic. I love patterns and this one is a real winner for me.

Take a look at a clock. Get a grown up to draw one for you like mine. You can do loads of maths using the numbers on the clock face. I have shown you one in pattern in my video. I will show you another one tomorrow.

Can you spot any by others with your grown ups?
Use the numbers to write number sentences.

Sumdog is set up for you this week with revision questions from all areas of counting.

That’s Maths Magic

There’s lots of ideas here to do with the days of the week.
Write out the days on postits.
Can you recognise and read each day?
Try this out:Today is……………..
Tomorrow will be …………….
Yesterday was ………………..
In two days time it will be……………………….
That might be tricky.
Use the words for handwriting. Your Pioneer will spot the use of capital letters and see the difference in size when used together with the lowercase.
The spelling is very tricky. If they want to try writing them by themselves then that is gret too.
Have a go at putting the days of the week in order

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zm9hscw
Here is a lnk to help you
Over the week we are going to build up to writitng our own “Days of the Week” sentences to turn into a little book in the same format as Mr Wolf’s Week.
Look out for a special Sleights C of E version in the next couple of days.
It’s a winner!

Listen and enjoy.
Here is our story to start the week.
The story talks about the days of the week, the weather and what Mr Wolf is wearing.
Your teachers are getting together to make their own version of this story and I think you could start your preparation to do the same.
Start by making a chart.
You will need : Day of the week, weather, clothes, what can we do

By the end of the week you will have all the stuff you need to write your own story.

Here is a silly reading book to work on some of the trickier sounds. As always go slowly, especially after the holidays. Take a look back at Geraldine and the sound sheet to remind your Pioneer of the sounds. Go through the words on the first page-these are the most challenging in the book.
First, enjoy the book together and build up to spotting the sounds and known words before reading the sentences.
Happy Reading

Thursday’s Learning Suggestion – Plastic Bottle Bird Feeder

Good Morning everybody,

The beautiful sunshine has been smiling at us this week, and after spending lots of time outdoors, I thought you might like to create a bird feeder. This will give you something wonderful to watch, as you look out of your window, or eat your lunch in the garden.

This bird feeder is very simple to create, and requires few materials. It also allows us to do some recycling: using any plastic bottles that are around the home.

Here is the link to the video, which explains how to make the feeder, and exactly what you need.

I have also included a written document, as you may find this easier to follow.

Send us pictures of your bird feeders, and see if you can capture any birds in action.

Have a wonderful day,

See you at story time

Mrs Taylor
