Circle,Square,Rectangle,Triangle

The Pioneers have been making shapes with Meccano, with blocks and with magnetic rods and balls and Geoboards and elastic ba They have sorted a huge number of shapes and noted and discussed the similarities and differences. They noticed that there are a variety of types of triangle and that not all four sided shapes are squares or rectangles.

They have printed with 3D shape and noticed the shapes of the faces.

The Feely Bag has been a big hit.

Friday 8th October 2021

Hello All,

This week has been a super busy week for Discoverers class.

On Wednesday, our boys football team visited Eskdale School and played many matches of football against local Whitby schools. We played together well, used lots of communication, and achieved third place overall 😀 We were very proud of this.

On Thursday this week, we took part in a class band lesson. Each week, will we have a music lesson to teach us how to play the clarinet, saxophone, trombone or trumpet. We are taking home our instruments today and can’t wait to share what we have learnt with our families.

In Collective Worship, we have been thinking about the quote: ‘Write your troubles in the sand, but carve your blessings in stone’. We have explored the meaning behind this and are trying to focus on the positives in our lives, and the things we are thankful for.

Have a great weekend,

Discoverers

Learners are mathematicians!

We have been working hard in maths this week, learning addition facts and inverse operations. we’ve practised every day and by the end of the week we’ve cracked it! Such an achievement!

In English, we have focused in on London (as we have been so interested to learn more). We have immersed ourselves in London’s landmarks using drone footage. This has inspired us to write about where we would visit if we were to spend the day in London and why we would choose to do so.

In Science, we have found out what makes day and night happen. We used torches and globes to demonstrate how the sun shines on the Earth as it rotates – we found this fascinating!

We have shared stories together as always and have particularly enjoyed Katie in London by James Mayhew this week.

We love books in Learners Class!

Adventurers’ French Day

Adventurers have had a wonderful day, immersing ourselves in French culture.

We started the day making banners and bunting in the French flag colours, then learnt lots of different French greetings.

We played french bingo with numbers 1-10 and learnt that bingo in French is ‘bab.la’.

Later in the morning, we tried lots of different french cuisine, including croissants, choc au pan, baguettes and brie cheese.

After lunch, we did some paintings in the style of Georges Seurat and made the Eiffel tower using straws.

Friday 1st October 2021

This week we have spent some time in the forest which allowed us to check on the status of our structures and answer the million dollar question as to whether the kindling was still  dry.  We were not too hopeful as it has been very windy and rainy.   We found a mixture of results but we were able to identify which structures had worked well and why, which should help us in the future. The next questions were: could we light a fire; did we have enough kindling.

We managed to get the fire lit but quickly realised that there would not be enough kindling to boil our Kelly Kettle.  We decided to fill our most successful structures with more kindling so that we will be able to look forward to a nice warm drink (as it gets colder) the next time we are in the forest.

In collective worship this week, we have been continuing our journey through the bible although we are still in the book of Genesis.  We found out about the test that God gave Abraham in terms of sacrifice and what this means.

A Windswept Success

On Friday afternoon, Discoverers’ class visited Whitby Rugby Club for a fun-filled afternoon of rugby.

We battled the forces and played such fun activities, whilst seeing some familiar faces and having so many giggles 😃

Everybody worked hard, played hard, and enjoyed our first trip of many this year!

Here’s to some fantastic rugby skills being learned, and having such a ball with our class family ❤️

Even ‘the wheels on the bus’ was welcomed!

Have a great weekend everybody!

This Week in Collective Worship

This week we read together the story of  Loaves and Fishes. When I said loaf, the Pioneers thought that I said love. Maybe they really understood the story! Love and Fishes.

Our story,The Red Hat continued our theme of thankfulness and those who are thankful for us. The little girl is given a red hat by her grandfather and they have lots of fun sharing time together.

We took a look at the church in our village and talked about what happens there. We spotted it from the classroom window.

We now have a prayer space with the church and the trees. This will build up over the next week.

The Enormous Turnip and other Vegetables

We have pulled and yanked and heaved and dragged a selection of vegetables from their soil. The Pioneers looked over the root systems and pulled off the stems and the leaves. The spiders and woodlice ran for their lives. We read a number of books about vegetables and talked about our experiences of planting, growing, harvesting and eating.

We read different versions of the old favourite,  “The Enormous Turnip” and retold our version with a story map and puppets to help us.

It’s been a very lovely week of learning together.

Another busy week for Adventurers!

Adventurers are becoming experts on France, as we continue to add more information to our reports in our English, French and Geography lessons. We have learnt all about French food, saying the correct words in French then making up our own French menus. We have researched all the things you can do and see in France and can name many well known landmarks!

We are all really looking forward to our ‘French Day’ next week.

The children enjoy working with Mrs Gurney (ICT specialist) every Friday morning and have been learning and following subject specific language when carrying out sequencing tasks on Tinker.

In art this week, we have been recreating cave paintings by making our own foam prints of prehistoric animals and printing these onto distressed paper. The results looked very realistic.

From my head to my toes

We had a different sort of P.E lesson this morning! As we have been reading the story ‘From my head to toes’ by Eric Carle, we thought we would get moving like the animals in the book. The children used their listening ears and waited for instructions, copying the movements Miss Idle, Mrs Wharrick and Mrs Exelby made from the book. They used all different body parts to move around the room.
