Chinese New Year Celebrations to End the Week

Hello Visitors,

This week, we have spent maths lessons focusing on how to calculate tricky division questions. We have used bus stop method, and our times table, to help us work through questions. 

In English, we have finished writing our newspaper reports, and are so excited to share them with our families and the local community. They certainly highlight the importance of giving, and being generous (our current Collective Worship value).

Families joined us today, to end a brilliant week. We celebrated Chinese New Year in style, and created lanterns, origami bunnies, fortune cookies and pictures. Take a look at the pictures below to see us in action:

Another week in Adventurers class!

We have had a brilliant week in Adventurers class this week! Especially celebrating Chinese New Year this morning creating stained glass rabbits and paper chain dragons!

In Science, we learnt about how to keep safe around electricity. We talked about the risks of electricity and made posters to tell people about the dangers and how to keep safe.

We learnt more about Elizabeth Catlett in art and practiced our shading to create texture using biros, charcoal and graphite. Now, we are ready to move onto printing our designs next week!

Also, we are almost finished writing our newspapers about Hope Whitby. We are ready to write our final copies into a proper newspaper format like real journalists. We have all felt really inspired learning about the loving charity over the past three weeks.

A Whole Lot of Reading and Writing Going On

The Pioneers have been writing and reading all over the place this week. The Elves have increased in numbers and now there are 7 although one is only visiting. The elves have been leaving notes and the Pioneers have been replying. They have labelled pictures,used a story map and read our own version of the story with Stan and Jan and the elf.

It has been buzzing this week and the use of phonics and resulting writing has been absolutely glorious to see.

An exciting week for Sleights!

It has been an exciting week for Sleights this week, as we found out that Sleights is to get a new school building. This created a real buzz in Learners Class, prompting discussions of what the new building would be like and things we might like in our new playground. We are so excited to be involved in this new, exciting project!

This week in the classroom (and outdoors), Learners have worked their socks off! We have been using alliteration to help us decide on the headlines for our newspaper report, We have gathered all our information in preparation to begin writing our reports next week and we are now bursting with ideas!

To launch our new history unit Kings and Queens, we have been thinking about the word Monarch. Learners could confidently name our King and knew that he had recently come to the throne. We had discussions about the line of succession and how it was decided who became King or Queen next. Learners were very enthusiastic and can’t wait to find out more about the Royal family. To embed our learning, we made and decorated our own crowns.

On Friday we braved the weather and visited the forest. Our focus was science based, our current topic being ‘Living Things and their Habitat’. Our aim was to spot deciduous trees and evergreen trees. We decided that January was the perfect month to do this, as the trees were easily identifiable. We really enjoyed the freshness of learning outdoors, some found bugs and creepy crawlies, which will aid our discussions next week around things that are alive or not alive.

There is a real excitement for learning in Learners Class!

 

Adventurers – first full week back!

Adventurers have had a very busy first full week back!

In maths this week, we have been focusing on our 3 times table. We are all doing an awesome job! We have continued to plan our newspapers about the fabulous charity, Hope Whitby. In PE, we started to learn how to dribble a ball in hockey and we began our swimming lessons.

We have also been learning about the how the Roman Empire was formed in History and how the Earth is constructed in Geography. We have enjoyed learning all about Elizabeth Catlett in art and all of her detailed and inspiring artwork.

Sleights Inspired by Hope Whitby

Hello Visitors,

Since returning to school after the Christmas break, we have been thinking about how charities help others. We had a visit from Bec at Hope Whitby this week, and we are feeling very inspired by the work of her team: providing a foodbank and warm space to Whitby and the surrounding areas.

With this is mind, we are hoping to raise awareness of this fantastic charity, and are in the process of creating newspaper reports to share with our family and Friends. 

In addition to this, our new value for this half term is ‘courage’. We are learning about courageous people in history, and the things that we can do to make a difference in the world. We seek strength from the bible quote: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1.9

We hope that you can join us in standing up for what’s right, and challenging the wrong!

The Elves Have Arrived

We have been very busy in our first week back and we have been visited by the elves from our story,”The Elves and The Shoemaker”.

We got together to handle some artefacts belonging to a shoemaker. There were a variety of shoelasts with nobbles and bumps and a selection of soles,laces and zips and collars. We got our hands on a typewriter and an old telephone and discussed how they were so different to the things we use today.

The elves left us some notes asking for Elf Snacks and Buns and Hot Coffee so we got on with making these. We have also written replies to the elves.

The elves joined us in the library too.

This has been a great start to the term.

A new year and a new term.

Happy new year to Learners Class and families, 2023 is upon us.

Learners class breezed back into class this week, like we had never been away. We got straight back into routine and embraced learning from the outset. This just shows the dedication Learners have and it also shows that we are a school family that were glad to see each other again after the Christmas break. 

Our new topic this term is ‘Make It Work’, there are lots of engaging curriculum activities ahead that we will be excited to share in the coming weeks.

This week we have been learning and practising our new focus times table, the 5 times table. We have used resources to help us and have been spotting patterns within the numbers.

Our new Geography topic is ‘Would you rather live in a hot country or a cold country?’. This week we have been finding out about the 7 continents of the world, which has prompted wonderful discussions – ask your Learner about this, they are very knowledgeable.

We are excited to begin our new writing focus and are delighted to use our very own ‘Parker’ as a focus for our newspaper report. Parker initiated a school appeal to help the homeless in our area, I think you will agree he is very worthy of a newspaper report about his story, we will keep you posted of our writing progress.

This term our PE day will be Monday and we will be swimming on Tuesday mornings – please make sure you PE kits and swimming things come into school on these days.

Learners are excited about our new curriculum focuses this term and can’t wait to get started.

A snowy end to the term.

Learners Class have been VERY busy, we have enjoyed our Nativity and Christingle Service in Church, a visit to the Pantomime, Christmas crafts with families and a wonderful Christmas dinner and party! Wow! 

The snow fell on Wednesday, which caused great excitement

We have even found the time for some wonderful Christmas writing, inspired by the book Mog’s Christmas Calamity by Judith Kerr. We created story maps in order to familiarise ourselves with the story, then made a change to the story by creating our own Christmas calamities featuring our own pets and in some cases ourselves! 

 

Learners Class have had a wonderful first term, jam-packed with learning, laughter and teamwork. 

Happy Christmas to Learners Class and families. I can’t wait to see what the new year brings!

A Pantomime, A Party and A Christmas Play

What a week we have had in Pioneers and a wonderful week it was. We started with a dress rehearsal in Church and made the long walk up and down the hills to get there. Then we had the excitement of a live performance in front of all of the families and friends and the church was packed full of happiness. A day of learning in the classroom was followed by an exciting trip to church for our second performance and this was magnificent.

We woke up to a cold and frosty morning with a blanket of snow and this was the day to travel to the Pantomime. Dick Whittington did not disappoint and we booed and hissed and cheered until we got back on the bus in time for a late lunch.

Party Day was full of new learning. We mastered the balloon relay and the flappy fish game. Musical Chairs has so many rules!

A very happy week in Pioneers.
