Welcome to Adventurers

Welcome to Adventurers!

Adventurers Class are Year 3 children, ages 7 -8. They are taught by Mrs Brown and supported in class by Mrs Wood.

Adventurers are taught English and Maths everyday and enjoy covering all the curriculum foundation subjects in afternoon lessons. This half term, the children will be taught P.E and ICT on a Wednesday afternoon by specialist teachers. They will also have P.E again on a Thursday afternoon. The children will need to keep their P.E bags at school ready to take part in other activities if required and bring their swimming kit every Tuesday morning.

We try and read with the children every day at school and encourage children to develop their love of reading at home too. Reading books and  records will be sent home every night and books will be changed when they are completed.

In Year 3, children will be given homework in maths and spellings. For maths, the children will be set work weekly on Sumdog. This will be given on a Thursday and checked the following Thursday. New spellings will be given out alternate Thursdays and children will be tested on them the Thursday of the second week (I will write the test date on their spelling sheet).

Please don't hesitate to ask if there is anything else we can help you with.

Welcome to Discoverers

Discoverers Class

Welcome to the Discoverers class page 😀

In our class we are taught by Mrs Taylor, who is supported by Mrs Exelby.

We are in year 4, which means that we are 8 turning 9 (we love to share our birthdays).

We have busy weeks in here, with English and Mathematics lessons taught daily, and some lessons which happen once a week, like computing with Mrs Gurney on a Thursday afternoon.

Also on a Thursday, we have magical music with Ralph (our amazing music teacher). We need to remember to practice our instruments at home, and then bring them in on a Thursday morning ready for our lesson.

On a Tuesday morning, we have swimming, so we need to bring in our swimming kits every Tuesday morning during the Autumn term. We need to bring in our PE kits on a Friday morning.

We bring our books and reading records to school each day, and change them when we have finished reading them. This happens during the week when we share our books with Mrs Taylor or Mrs Exelby.

Each week, homework is set up for us on Sumdog. Sumdog is a fun website, which helps us practice our maths skills through playing games. It is set up for us to complete on a Thursday. We also get spelling homework too. This happens every other Thursday, and we are tested on the spellings during the Tuesday of the second week. We practice our spellings during the week at school, too.

Below, you will find blogs that we write, to share all of the special memories we make in this class. Feel free to check them out 😀

Welcome to Learners Class

Welcome to Learners' class page!

Learners Class currently includes Year 1 and Year 2, where the children are between the ages of 5 years to 7 years old. The class is taught by myself (Mrs Brown) and is supported by Mrs Creek.

We teach Maths and English daily and are lucky enough to provide a full and rich curriculum to our children with lots of exciting learning opportunities, including regular visits to our own school forest. We enjoy Collective Worship together each day, where we explore different values each half term. Our current value is Generosity.

This term, we are pleased to be able  to enjoy a weekly PE session with Mr Gokool, this will take place on Wednesday afternoons (please make sure your child has a PE kit in school). A second PE session will also take place on Friday afternoons. Also, each Wednesday afternoon, we have IT lessons run by Mrs Gurney, providing us with valuable learning around technology.

Learners Class are passionate about reading and enjoy stories and books together daily. Each child has their own reading record diary, which goes between home and school alongside each child's reading book. These are used to record reading at home and are also brought in to school each day to record reading in class. Class reading books are changed regularly throughout the week.

Alongside reading at home, spellings are handed out on Tuesdays and tested the following Tuesday. Please support your child's reading at home by sharing and enjoying a book together each day - it really does make a difference! Children use the online tool 'Sumdog' to strengthen their Maths skills. On the programme, children have their own character and are rewarded with coins and prizes for completing homework tasks.

For more up-to-date information of what we are learning, please keep an eye on our weekly class blog!

Best wishes,

Mrs Brown

Welcome to Explorers Class

Children start their learning journey at Sleights in Explorers Class. Our hardworking and dedicated team is made up of Mrs Bland, Mrs Gurney, Mrs Wharrick and Miss Idle, our Pre-School leader. Explorers children enjoy activities that stimulate and engage children’s interests and lead to spontaneous play.

Practitioners know the children and their strengths and areas for development. It is this excellent knowledge that enables children to establish excellent foundations for their time at Sleights.

Explorers Class is open from 8.50am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday during term time. We are very flexible at accommodating sessions to suit all families. This can include mornings, afternoons, or all day. Lunch is also offered for children.

We are proud to be able to offer 2 year old provision for children in Explorers class. We are able to offer both private and funded places for children when they turn 2.

The term after their 3rd birthday, all children become eligible for government funding, this allows them to access 15 hours free childcare a week, or 30 hours for qualifying working families.  It is possible to share funding between two different childcare settings and if you would like to do so please inform a member of staff.

Wherever possible, we are happy to admit children after their 2nd or 3rd birthday prior to the funding commencing. However, this is dependent on the availability of spaces at the time.

Clothes

We hope that children in Explorers Class will enjoy a variety of play – some of it messy! With this in mind, we ask families to consider the clothes that children in Explorers wear during sessions.

Key Worker

Each child in Explorers is allocated a key worker. The aim of this role is to oversee your child’s learning and development journey throughout their time in Explorers. This key worker will share key learning activities with children and report strengths and target areas to parents and families.

Welcome to Leaders

Welcome to Leaders class! Leaders is an exciting time for the children at Sleights as they are the oldest children in school. Leaders class includes children from Year 5 and 6. They are taught by Mrs Porter and supported by Mr Everall in their own building on the school playground.

In Leaders, children are taught maths and English daily and they also gather together with the rest of the school in collective worship. This half term our Christian value is ‘generosity’.

Children in Leaders class love to read. The children are very lucky to have an amazing school and class library, filled with a diverse range of books that they can enjoy reading for pleasure. Children also enjoy listening to the class story at the end of each school day. We are currently reading ‘The Jamie Drake Equation’. In addition to reading for pleasure, Leaders also enjoy sharing a range of texts during whole class reading sessions, where they have the opportunity to read fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts as well as a whole class reading book. This half term, Leaders will be reading ‘Journey to Jo’burg’ in whole class reading sessions. Reading at home is also incredibly important. Please record the reading that your child does at home in their reading record and ensure that this, alongside their individual reading book, is in school every day.

This term, the whole school topic is ‘Whitby’. Leaders will be basing their art and geography work around this theme. Alongside this, children will learn about earth and space in science and black history in history lessons.

Children in Leaders class are very lucky to be taught by specialist teachers throughout the week. On a Tuesday, children will need their PE kits in school so that they can take part in dance with Hannah Verity. They will also need to bring their swimming kits on Tuesdays for swimming lessons, which will take place at Whitby Leisure Centre on a Tuesday morning. Children will continue to bring home their instruments to practice throughout the week and these will need to be returned on a Thursday morning ready for music with Ralph. Computing with Mrs Gurney will also take place on a Thursday afternoon.

Each week, homework will be set on Sumdog on a Thursday. Children will also receive spellings every two weeks; these will be sent home on a Thursday. Spellings tests will happen on the second Wednesday.

Our class blog will be updated each week so keep an eye on this for exciting updates throughout the term.
