British Values

At Sleights Church of England (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School, we are committed to serving our community and educating our families about the diverse, multi-cultural and multi-faith society of our world. We recognise our vital role in ensuring that the children of Sleights are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation.

The Government emphasises that schools are required to ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught in all UK schools.  The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.

The British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At Sleights, we embed the British Values through a range of curriculum opportunities. Our British values are promoted in much of what we do, not least during our Collective Worships, Religious Education sessions and PHSCE activities. The values are integral to our ethos statement and the vision we have for all our pupils complements British values.

As well as actively promoting British values, the opposite also applies: we would actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including ‘extremist’ views.

The children have worked to illustrate our understanding of British Values with local artist, Liz Collier.

The artwork below shows the final pieces of work produced by children and Liz to illustrate our views and understanding of the British Values.
