A Great Day in Forest School

The weather was kind to us when we spent the morning in Forest school on Wednesday. As part of our English and History topic the children worked in groups to build a Stone Age house. I was so impressed that they were all very different! Some were built from clay and stones, some from wood and grass. We had near life size houses and mini replicas with stone and clay furniture. The children had to present their houses to the rest of the class and talk about what their best features were.

In art we had a go at dying material using natural dyes such as brambles, blueberries and spinach and used elastic bands to make a tie dye effect.

Busy, busy, busy.

Wow, another busy week in Learners’ Class.

In RE this week, we have been reflecting on the times we have heard Christian prayers and hymns.  We thought about how these songs and prayers made us feel and how they help Christians learn about what God is like.

In maths, we have been getting to grips with money, finding out the worth of each coin and using these to help us problem solve. We are also becoming 10 times table whizzes, – which is our focus times table this half -term.

In English and History, we have been comparing our own homes with that of Victorian homes. We were quite shocked to learn about a time with no TV or games consoles! We were even more shocked to learn that the toilet was outside in Victorian times – this caused a real stir in class!

We have enjoyed printing using paints and leaves this week in Art. There is no shortage of autumn leaves to be collected and we enjoyed using different coloured paints to print. Our leaf creations are beautiful.

Remember, next Wednesday is Forest School day, please come dressed appropriately for the weather with lots of warm layers. We are sure to have a fun day!

Colour in our Forest

The week has been all about Pumpkin Soup and our forest finds.

We have told and retold the story and acted it out with the toys, discussing the importance of friendship and how to sort out our differences.

We discussed our Christian Value of Trust and how we can help each other out.

In the forest we scooped out the pumpkins and collected the seed. We foraged for ingredients to cut and mix and stir.

The Pioneers were incredible when collecting and colour matching. It was quite impressive.

Back in the classroom, the Pioneers created their story maps and added lots of writing.

They can write and read so many words now. It is so good.

A week to remember….

In RE this week, we have enjoyed the Bible story ‘Jonah and the Whale’. We discussed the key points of the story and were able to make clear links with God and explain how Christians use the story of Jonah to guide their beliefs. RE is one of Learners’ favourite subjects and the discussions in class are always heart-felt and meaningful.

In DT, we have enjoyed designing, creating and evaluating rockets! They look amazing and will be zooming home at the end of the week.

We took our maths learning outside this week. Armed with chalk and our learning, we wrote the ten times table in our own space of the playground. This was so much fun. Outdoor learning is always a winner!

On Thursday (Armistice Day) we remembered those who have fought in the War to protect us. We created beautiful fields of poppies, using paints and finger printing. We were very proud of our pictures and displayed them outside our classroom at the end of the day for all to see.

We have enjoyed LOTS of stories together as always this week – we love books!

I hope you enjoy reading about our week!

Friday 5th November 2021

Welcome back to our first week after half term.  The colder weather has definitely come to visit and Leaders are thankful for their cosy environment.

This week has been very practical: we have made Rangoli artwork whilst investigating the festival of Diwal; Manglewick candles from our class novel ‘Shadowghast’ whilst investigating shadows; making bridges to help our refuge escape their home country.

There was lots of accurate marking and precision cutting in the building of our bridge structures and we are looking forward to testing out our bridges next week.

In collective worship this week, we have started a new value of Trust and the children have been trying to give trust a definition and investigating what this means.  We have looked at faith as a mustard seed and discussed how, from something small, something much bigger can grow.

A trip to Danby Moor Centre and Diwali Celebrations!

Adventurers have been learning all about Diwali, the Hindu Festival of light. we shared the sacred story of Rama and Sita and made and decorated clay hand dishes. We also enjoyed colouring  Rangoli Patterns and then embellishing these with tissue paper.

On Tuesday, the sun shone for our trip to the Danby Moor Centre. We took part in lots of activities including: learning about different maps, how to read a key and how to find different human and physical features using 4 figure grid references. We really enjoyed doing field work and learning how to use a compass to navigate a course to help find a secret code.

We even had time to enjoy the wonderful play park and take in the beautiful surroundings!

Astronauts in the making!

As part of our new writing focus, we have been excited to watch an advert from the European Space Agency this week.  The Agency was appealing for astronaut candidates for their new space mission – we decided to apply!

We thought carefully about the skills and qualities we had that would make us a successful astronaut – we had lots!.

On Wednesday, we had an interview selection process in class – see attached photo. We interviewed potential astronauts (our friends) and asked them some probing questions about their skills and qualities. Luckily – we all got the job!

Next week, we will be launching into space and writing a newspaper report to reflect our journey!

Also this week, we have been celebrating Diwali. We created our own artwork to show how we individually interpreted light. We used brightly coloured paints to reflect brightness, joy and positivity. Take a look at our Gallery of artwork. I think you will agree they look wonderful.

There will be some new challenges set on Sumdog this week, so enjoy the games and test your skills.

Don’t forget to watch our School Harvest Festival on Tapestry this week. It is just lovely.

A Very Special Visitor

The Pioneers prepared for Mr Atherton’s visit by taking a look at his Green Cook Book. We got to grips with some new vocabulary-equipment,recipe and ingredients. We talked about a range of equipment and the use in our classroom-sieve,scales,garlic press and measuring cups.

The Pioneers made their own dough and talked about the ingredients they needed-yeast,oil,flour,sugar and water. They wrote a name label for their bags and popped the dough in to keep it safe for the next day.

They made a wonderful selection of Woodland Pizza for the Helpful Hedgehog.

So good.

Our Busiest Week Yet!

Hello Everybody,

This week has certainly been a busy one! It is our last week of the first half term, and it has been jam-packed with fun and excitement.

Some of our highlights have included: creating our skyscraper structures in design and technology, making pumpkin soup to celebrate Harvest, using polystyrene to create a Harvest-themed print and finally, getting to meet the inspirational David Atherton (2019 Great British Bake Off Winner).

We are just about to finish our class text: The Firework Maker’s Daughter, and can’t wait to see if our predictions are accurate.

Apart from that, we are looking forward to spending time with our family and friends during the next week.

We hope you enjoy your time too,
